CHAPTER 12
Roaaaarrrrrrrrr!
As soon as we ran into Umerâs bedroom, we saw it. The lid of the Tupperware box was lying on the carpet. Every single one of the samosas had VANISHED!
âI donât understand!â cried Umer. âI left them right here.â
âIf your mumâs eaten a dozen space-samosas,â I replied, âweâre gonna have a seriously angry supervillain on our hands.â
âNo way â she wouldnât have,â said Umer, shaking his head. âI told my parents they were yours. They wouldnât have touched them.â
âUm, guys,â said Wendy. âI think I know what might have happened.â
She was facing the other way, looking at the desk, where the hamster cage stood. The empty hamster cage!
âOh no!â Umer gasped. âTheyâve escaped!â
âAnd theyâve eaten all my samosas!â I cried.
âAre you sure it was them?â replied Umer, clearly not wanting to believe it.
âHave you got a better theory?â I snapped. âThe cage is wide open, the samosas are missing, and all thatâs left in the box is a bunch of tiny brown poos! I donât think we need CSI to solve this one, do you?â
âWhat do you suppose happens when hamsters eat space-samosas?â asked Wendy.
No one said a word. I donât think we wanted to consider it. But something told me we werenât going to have a choice. Umer had left his bedroom window open. Wherever the hamsters were now, they werenât in here â¦
Out in the garden, we all began hunting around â in bushes, under plant pots, behind the shed ⦠anywhere we could think of that a hamster might hide.
âMaybe theyâre invisible, like that cat girl,â suggested Umer.
âOr maybe theyâve turned into chickens like you and flown away?â I replied.
âChickens canât really fly,â replied Wendy.
âOK, penguins then. You know what I mean.â
âMaybe weâre worrying over nothing,â said Umer, who was crouching near the garden table. âMaybe it only works on people. Theyâre probably just normal hamsters still. Nothing to be concerned about.â
And thatâs when we heard it â¦
âROAAAAAAARRRRRR!â
It came from nearby, maybe next door â it was hard to say. It sounded like a lion but ⦠bigger.
âWh-wh-wh-what was that?â stammered Umer.
âProbably nothing,â I replied.
âReally?â he said, looking puzzled.
âNo, you idiot! Itâs obviously a giant radioactive hamster! What do you think it was?â
Something was moving on the other side of the fence. I could hear plants snapping beneath heavy footsteps.
I could hear breathing â¦
Grunting â¦
And then ⦠silence.
None of us breathed. None of us moved an inch. Eventually Umer looked up at me.
âDo you think itâs gone?â he whispered.
And thatâs when the whole fence exploded.
âROAAAAAAARRRRRR!â
An elephant-sized hamster burst through the wall, sending wooden shards flying in every direction.
âAARRRRGGGHHHHH!â we all screamed.
This thing was a monster! It must have been five metres tall. It had huge, dripping fangs, muscles like The Rock, and the angriest eyes Iâd seen since I âaccidentallyâ flushed my dadâs car keys down the toilet.
âRUN!â I shouted.
âThis way!â said Umer, pointing to a gap between the two houses.
The alley was big enough for the three of us to escape down, but there was no way a monster like that was fitting through.
